Leslie (Deede) Miller
Artist’s Statement
Having grown up on the coast of North Carolina, I have always been attracted to the water and boats. Out of college, I began my career working for the University of North Carolina Marine Science Institute in Morehead City, illustrating a book on fishes, sharks and rays of North Carolina and working on research projects on trawlers.
In recent years, I have spent summers in Newfoundland, Canada, painting outdoors and recently had a show in Nova Scotia exhibiting many of my Canadian paintings. It was a culmination of years of paintings and most all of the paintings found homes back in Newfoundland or in Nova Scotia.
Residing near the Chesapeake Bay has opened many new painting possibilities as I explore the region and small fishing villages. Over the last few years, I have been painting while camping with my artist sister at state parks all over Virginia.
In my work at Arundel Lodge, Inc. (a rehabilitation center near Annapolis, MD) as art instructor and director of our new gallery, I teach art and have presented the extraordinary art work of the members of the Lodge to the community through many art venues in the area. Most recently, I have established the Open Eye Gallery and the Open Eye Gallery. org website.
